International Women’s Day: Photographs celebrating Welsh women
Ar 8 Mawrth bob blwyddyn y mae Diwrnod Rhyngwladol y Menywod – diwrnod lle y bydd menywod yn cael eu dathlu dros y byd.
Nes i benderfynu creu blog ar y thema ’ma, achos bo fi’n aml yn tynnu lluniau o fenywod anhygoel ac ysbrydoledig o bob cwr o Gymru. Mae pob un ohonynt yn haeddu cael eu cydnabod am yr holl bethau gwahanol y maen nhw’n ei wneud.
March 8th every year is International Women’s Day – a day when all around the world, women are celebrated.
I thought to create a blog post on this theme, as I’m regularly photographing incredible and inspirational women across Wales, all of whom I believe deserve recognition for the many and varied things that they do.
Dwi’n dueddol o feddwl mewn caneuon neu luniau. Felly, pan yn meddwl am gydraddoldeb i fenywod, yn aml iawn, mae cân James Brown, ‘It’s Man’s Man’s World’ yn dod i fy meddwl. Chi siŵr o fod yn gyfarwydd â’r gân.
“This is a man’s world. This is a man’s world. But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl.”
Wrth i fi ddechre sgwennu’r blog ’ma, nes i benderfynu edrych ar hanes y gân cyn dechre sgwennu. A wnaeth James Brown ysgrifennu’r gân ei hun, meddyliais.
Falle ein bod ni’n dueddol o feddwl mai fe sgwennodd y gân, ond mae’n debyg fod Betty Newsom – ei gyd-sgwennwr a’i gariad ar y pryd – yn dweud nad oedd e wedi cyfrannu at sgwennu’r gân o gwbl. Mae hi hyd yn oed wedi dweud ei fod e wedi anghofio talu ei royalties ar gyfer y gân!

I tend to either think in song or images. So, when thinking of women’s equality, quite often James Brown’s song ‘It’s Man’s Man’s World’ pops into my head. You probably know how it goes?
“This is a man’s world. This is a man’s world. But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl.”
As I began to write this blog, I decided to look into the history behind the song before starting to write. Did James Brown write the song himself? I wondered.
We might assume he did, but it turns out that Betty Newsom - his co-writer and girlfriend at the time - claims that he did not contribute to the writing of the song at all. She’s even said that he forgot to pay her royalties for the song!

O ran fy mhrofiad i, dwi wastad wedi teimlo ‘mod i’n byw ym ‘myd y dynion’.
Yn yr ysgol gynradd, o’n i ishe chwarae yn y tîm pêl-droed ond doedd dim hawl i fi achos o’n i’n ferch. Dwi’n cofio’n glir bod ar ymyl y cael chwarae a dweud wrth riant un o’r bois a o’dd yn chwarae fy mod i ishe chwarae hefyd. Dywedodd hi wrtha i mai dim ond bechgyn oedd yn chwarae pêl-droed.
Dyma fy atgof cyntaf un o deimlo fel ‘mod i’n cael fy rhoi o’r neilltu am fod yn fenyw.
Bringing it back to my own experience, I've always felt as though I live in a 'man’s world'.
In primary school, I wanted to play in the football team but wasn't allowed because I was a girl. I distinctly remember being at the side-lines of the match and telling a parent of one of the boys that were playing that I wanted to play too. She said to me that only boys play football.
That’s my first memory of feeling cast aside for being female.

Yn ddiweddar ar y cyfryngau cymdeithasol dwi wedi sylwi ar llawer o fy ffrindiau ysgol a choleg sy'n mamau â merched sy'n chwarae peldroed ac yn mwynhau mynd i weld tim Merched Cymru. A hefyd yn ddiweddar mae fy ffrind Betsan wedi ymuno a tim peldroed ag o'dd hi fel fi wedi colli'r cyfle i chwarae pan oedd yn blentyn. Felly roeddwn eisiau tynnu potread o Betsan ai merch Casi ar gyfer y blog yma i ddangos y rhwystyr a'r brwydro i ni menywod dal yn gorfod gwneud i fod yn gyfartal â dynion.
Enghraifft arall yw pan, rai blynyddoedd yn ôl, es i gynhadledd lluniau yng Nghaerdydd, gydag Alun, fy ffrind nes i gwrdd ag e pan oedd y ddau ohonom yn gweithio yn siop luniau Jessops.
Pan o’n ni’n cerdded rownd a’n mynd lan at y stondinau, byddai’r bobl oedd yn gweithio ar y stondinau arddangos yn naturiol yn mynd yn syth draw at Alun. Bydden nhw’n siarad ac yn gwerthu iddo fe yn hytrach na fi. O’n nhw fel pe bai nhw’n cymryd mai fe oedd y ffotograffydd proffesiynol, a fi oedd ei gynorthwyydd bach achos mai fi oedd y fenyw!
Ar y pryd, nes i jyst chwerthin i fy hun am ba mor anghywir oedd y bobl ’ma.
Pan chi’n fenyw mewn diwydiant sydd i ddynion yn bennaf, fel ffotograffiaeth, mae’n gallu bod yn anodd stopio’r anghydraddoldeb parhaus rhag bwrw eich hyder.
Another example is when, a few years back, I went to a photo conference in Cardiff, visiting with Alun, my friend, who I met when we both worked at Jessops photo store.
When walking around the stalls and approaching stalls, people working on the exhibition stands would automatically make a beeline for Alun. They’d talk and sell to him rather than to me. They seemed to assume that he was the professional photographer and that I was his little assistant because I was the woman!
At the time, I just giggled to myself at how wrong these people were.
When you’re a woman in a male-dominant industry such as photography though, it can be hard not to let the drip, drip of inequality to knock your confidence.
Yn fy meddwl i, mae’r enghreifftiau hyn, a llawer tebyg iddyn nhw, yn dangos bod llawer mwy i’w wneud i sicrhau bod cydraddoldeb i fenywod. Ac mae llawer mwy i’w wneud yn y frwydr i gael ein parchu a’n gwerthfawrogi fel y caiff dynion fel arfer.
I fi, mae hi’n bwysig dros ben ein bod yn cydnabod ac yn dathlu menywod, a dwi’n teimlo’n angerddol am wneud pethau a all helpu menywod i gael eu trin yn fwy cyfartal.
In my mind, these examples and many others like them, go to show that we still have a long way to go in terms of female equality and in the battle to be respected and valued in the same way that men typically are.
I feel that recognising and celebrating women is incredibly important, and I feel passionately about doing things that might help women to be placed on a more equal kilter.
Felly, yn yr ysbryd hwn, dwi’n arddangos lluniau dwi wedi eu tynnu o fenywod anhygoel o Gymru dwi wedi cael y pleser o’u tynnu yn ystod fy ngyrfa fel ffotograffydd.
Maen nhw’n cynnwys casgliad o ddelweddau portread a bywyd. Maen nhw o bobl enwog, a rhai nad ydynt cweit mor enwog, a phob un yn fenywod o Gymru.
Dwi’n credu eu bod nhw i gyd yn ychwanegu gwerth mawr i’r byd, ac mae angen eu cydnabod ar Ddiwrnod Rhyngwladol y Menywdod.
So, in this spirit, I’m showcasing images I’ve taken of amazing Welsh women who I’ve had the absolute pleasure of photographing during my photography career.
They include a selection of portrait and lifestyle images and are of some famous, and also some not-so-famous, women from Wales.
I believe that all of them are adding great value to the world and deserve to be recognised this International Women’s Day.
